FINISH THE RIDE
THE VISION FOR SUZANNE ARLIE MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK

UZANNE ARLI

A VISON FOR SUZANNE ARLIE PARK

At Suzanne Arlie Park, the City of Eugene is building a foundational mountain bike trail system, including a central trailhead, skills park, and a network of trails. Finish the Ride, led by Eugene Parks Foundation, is the transformative next step—funding the final four advanced trails and three hubs that will elevate the park from a local amenity to a premier, countywide mountain biking destination.

THE OPPORTUNITY

At 565 acres, Suzanne Arlie Park is poised to become one of Eugene’s standout outdoor destinations—a place where prairie, oak, and forest meet a thoughtfully designed trail system. For beginners, families, and mountain bike enthusiasts, it’s an easy-to access “urban nature escape” with room to grow: space for skills progression, youth programs, events, and weekend visits from riders across the Willamette Valley and beyond.

The City’s investment lays the groundwork. Finish the Ride makes sure the experience lives up to the park’s potential.

THE FULL VISION: 11 TRAILS, 3 HUBS

The master vision for Suzanne Arlie’s bike park is bigger than the available funding. At full build-out, the trail system includes 11 trails of varying difficulty and 3 hubs that connect everything back to the central trailhead. The final four unfunded trails are the advanced, feature-rich descents that complete the progression from beginner to expert. The hubs give riders a natural place to meet up, refuel, and navigate—turning the trail network into a true “bike park within the park.”

WHY THE LAST FOUR TRAILS AND THREE HUBS MATTER

These final pieces aren’t just “more mileage,” they’re what make Suzanne Arlie feel like a destination.

  • Real progression: Riders can move from green to blue to black trails in one compact area, building skills over months and years instead of just checking a loop off a list.
  • Session-ready riding: Advanced lines, features, and flow sections are designed for laps. Riders will come back to re-ride favorite sections, push themselves, and share that experience with friends.
  • Hubs as gathering spaces: The three hubs offer seating, trail maps, and a natural place to take a break, regroup, and plan the next run—creating a social, community feel in the middle of the park.
  • Regional draw: Together, the 11 trails and 3 hubs position Eugene alongside places like Bend, Oakridge, and Hood River as a weekend destination for riders across the Willamette Valley and the greater PNW.

FINISH THE RIDE WITH US

The City is investing in the core experience within Suzanne Arlie Park. Eugene Parks Foundation is stepping in to finish the ride by raising private funds for the final four advanced trails and three hubs.

For local businesses, riding groups, and independent donors, this is a chance to put your name behind the “crown jewel” features of the park—the trails and gathering spots people will talk about, share, and return to. The sooner we secure funding, the more we can align this work with construction already happening through 2026.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

To Eugene’s mountain bike community: thank you. You’ve built, maintained, and advocated for trails for years, often carrying the weight with limited support. We see it, we respect it, and we’re grateful to partner with you to help complete the Suzanne Arlie Mountain Bike Park.

This sheet is here to promote transparency and build trust and confidence in the Finish the Ride campaign, and in the shared vision of transforming Eugene into a true mountain biking destination.

Why are we fundraising? Shouldn’t this be part of the City's Parks Bond?

This is a completely fair question, and we agree that public parks deserve public investment.

The City of Eugene is already investing approximately $4 million in Suzanne Arlie Park, including building 7 of the 11 mountain bike trails.

However:

Signature projects often require a mix of public + private support.

The next Parks Bond is scheduled for 2028, with no guarantee this project would receive enough funding.

Waiting could mean delay or reduced scope.

The time is now. Private funding doesn’t replace public funding, it helps finish what’s already underway.

How do we know donations won’t be diverted?

We appreciate this question. Trust matters.

1. You donate to EPF, not the City. EPF is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

2. Donations go into a restricted fund: “Finish the Ride – Suzanne Arlie Mountain Bike Park.” Restricted funds cannot legally be used for other projects.

3. Funds transfer only under the City–EPF MOU: Funds are transferred only after the agreed project scope is completed and the City provides expense reporting. EPF is the grantor. The city is the grantee.

4. EPF is accountable to donors and stakeholders We steward donor intent and serve as a trusted partner and watchdog in this public-private effort.

Why does this campaign cost $600,000? Can’t we build it ourselves?

We deeply honor the mountain bike community’s long tradition of volunteer trail building, Eugene’s trail culture exists because riders have shown up.

That said, Suzanne Arlie is a different kind of project. This campaign funds:

4 advanced mountain bike trails

3 trail hubs

These trails require professional, technical construction because they will be high-use, high-visibility, and complex from a safety, liability, and City acceptance standpoint. A clear chain of responsibility, from contractors to inspection, is essential.

Volunteers remain essential, especially for long-term stewardship and maintenance once the park is complete.

Transparency: What your donation builds

We want fundraising progress to connect directly to real outcomes:

Every $120,000 raised helps build one of the four trails

Every $40,000 raised helps build one of the three trail hub

Campaign Goal: $600,000 = 4 trails + 3 hubs

Are there admin fees in the goal?

Yes — capital campaigns include real costs such as:

communications and outreach

grant writing and reporting

donor stewardship and coordination

staff time to responsibly run a high 6-figure campaign

EPF has already invested thousands of dollars in staff and outreach to prioritize this project and bring new donors into the effort.
